INSIDER TRADING BY CONGRESS

CBC/Radio-Canada Biography

Position: Not Clearly Pro or Con to the question "Should Insider Trading by Congress Be Allowed?"
Reasoning:
"...Illegal insider trading is not a 'victimless' crime...

...Investors who unknowingly trade with people who have inside information lose because they are in an unequal and unfair relationship. Markets where illegal insider trading occurs can suffer a loss of liquidity if international capital flows avoid them..."
'In Depth: Crime' report, "Insider Trading - What's the Problem?" Dec. 21, 2005, www.cbc.radio-canada.ca
Theoretical Expertise Ranking:  Organizations/VIPs/Others

Description:
"...CBC/Radio Canada is Canada's national public broadcaster and one of its largest cultural institutions. With 29 services offered on Radio, Television, the internet, satellite radio, digital audio, as well as through its record and music distribution service and wireless WAP and SMS messaging services, CBC/Radio-Canada is available how, where, and when Canadians want it.

Through this array of activities, CBC/Radio-Canada brings diverse regional and cultural perspectives into the daily lives of Canadians in English, French and eight aboriginal languages, in nine languages on its international Radio service, TCO, and in eight languages on its web-based radio service RCO viva, a service for recent aspiring immigrants to Canada.

Eight corporate objectives grouped under six strategic areas guide the way we do business.

CBC/Radio-Canada's mandate is set out in the 1991 Broadcasting Act. CBC/Radio-Canada is accountable to all Canadians, reporting annually to parliament through the Minister of Canadian Heritage.

CBC/Radio-Canada is governed by a Board of Directors, which is comprised of 12 members, including both the Chair and the President and CEO.

"About CBC/Radio Canada," www.cbc.radio-canada.ca (accessed July 3, 2008)
Mission:
"The 1991 Broadcasting Act states that...

'...the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, as the national public broadcaster, should provide radio and television services incorporating a wide range of programming that informs and enlightens and entertains;

...the programming provided by the Corporation should:

1. be predominantly and distinctively Canadian, 2. reflect Canada and its regions to national and regional audiences, while serving the special needs of those regions, 3. actively contribute to the flow and exchange of cultural expression, 4. be in English and in French, reflecting the different needs and circumstances of each official language community, including the particular needs and circumstances of English and French linguistic minorities, 5. strive to be of equivalent quality in English and French, 6. contribute to shared national consciousness and identity, 7. be made available throughout Canada by the most appropriate and efficient means and as resources become available for the purpose, and 8. reflect the multicultural and multiracial nature of Canada.
